Rwanda-based NGO Red Rocks Initiative for Sustainable Development is urging international partners to support their mission to protect Virunga Massif, a critical via ecosystem spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Known for its outstanding biodiversity, including the endangered mountain gorillas, the area is also home to communities that rely on natural resources for their livelihoods.
Founded in 2017, Red Rocks Initiative leads the Viruunga Massif project, which promotes conservation through community-driven programs in ecotourism, sustainable agriculture and skills training. The key initiatives combine environmental protection and livelihood development to target women and young people. Through cross-border work, the organization aims to build long-term ecological and economic resilience across the Birunga landscape, while promoting inclusive, grassroots-led protection.
