Visit this beautifully preserved English village with cobblestone streets, invite pubs and have a wealth of typical charm. Southend-on-sea attracts over 7 million visitors a year, and is not an undiscovered treasure.
Located at the mouth of Essex, this vast resort is famous for hosting the UK's largest free street art festival and the world's longest joyful pier. Here you will also discover award-winning beaches, vibrant arcades and highly acclaimed Shea Life adventures. But if the bustle of busy streets and lively nightlife isn't your tea, a mere 13 minute walk will take you to Leigh-on-Sea.
The small resort boasts a thriving shopping scene filled with galleries and craft shops, giving off a nostalgic 1950s, Miller reports.
But what's more fascinating than Lee on Sea is the old Lee – a quaint village often referred to as “the old town.”
“Oldley is a great place for the local economy, not just history, but also a 1,000-year-old fishing industry,” praise visits Southend, the region's official tourism bureau.
“Leave yourself to the famous Lee Cockles as you watch the boats go by the peaceful waters. Sailing Clubs, Sea Scouts, Motorboat Clubs and Yacht Clubs all offer educational welcome to Old Lee.”
History enthusiasts enjoy a trip to the centre of the old town, where you can explore Lee Heritage Centre. The area also has a selection of charming pubs and restaurants “very popular with both locals and tourists.”
A visit to Oldley is not completed without a walk along the pure white Bellwharf beach, often referred to as the “best secret” of England. This family-friendly coastline is perfect for relaxing with enchanting reads or taking a dip in the exhilarating British waters.
However, please note that dog bans are in effect on local beaches from May 1st to September 30th.
Located just 43 miles from central London, the drive to Oldley takes about an hour and a half as traffic is usually permitted.
Alternatively, you can shave for 28 minutes by opting to take the 49-minute train from Fenchurch Street to Chalkwell Station in Southend-on-sea.
From this point onwards, it is a 20-minute walk (1.4 miles) to Oldley. If your travel date is flexible, a single adult fare can be purchased for just £9.40. If you own a rail card, even fewer, even fewer.
Finding accommodation at Old Leigh or Leigh-on-Sea can be a bit of a challenge due to its compact size, but there are plenty of accommodation options nearby. For example, a weekend stay (Friday July 11-13, July 11-13) at Radisson Palace, just 2.4 miles from Region On Sea, costs £235.
This rate is for two adults who share a standard room. IHG's Holiday Inn Southend, 0.5 miles near Leigh-on-Sea, comes with a price tag of £264 on the same date.
