Qantas will reintroduce services between Perth and Johannesburg in December.
Last month, the airline announced an operational plan on its schedule, including services between Perth and Johannesburg. The airline has confirmed that the service will launch later this year.
The route is offered three times a week. Operated by an Airbus A330 aircraft. The first Perth Johannesburg service is scheduled to take off on December 7th. However, this date is subject to government and regulatory approval.
Auckland Flight Renewal
The announcement of this new route coincides with the reintroduction of Qantas flights from Perth to Auckland, New Zealand. Qantas cancelled seasonal services between Perth and Auckland in January 2018.
“By connecting Perth directly with Auckland and Johannesburg, we support the local economy by opening valuable inbound tourism opportunities in Western Australia and creating new jobs for the state. These routes allow for further growth across Australia with connectivity across the country's network,” Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace said in a media release.
Overcoming logistical obstacles
However, this is not the first time Qantas has provided services between Perth and Johannesburg. The airline operated this route for a short period of time several years ago. Skainability in the Sky reported that service was suspended due to logistical issues at Perth Airport, resulting in flights that left and arrived at different terminals.
The reopened service was made possible by funding allocated by the federal government to the Australian Border Agency and the Department of Agriculture and Forestry to provide additional border services at the airport. The funding will allow Perth Airport to invest in additional staffing, equipment and facilities that will increase border and biosecurity capabilities, allowing the airport to receive more international flights.
