The city of Tshwane has announced plans to resume commercial flights between Pretoria's Wonderboom National Airport and Cape Town by 2026. Speaking at the airport during a children's event in 2025, Mayor Eugene confirmed that the city approached the Civil Aviation Authority of South Africa to renew its route licenses and was also exploring future services to Durban. Flights between Pretoria and Cape Town were suspended in 2018 due to financial constraints.
The Wonderboom National Airport is positioned as a strategic local government asset and is expected to be reintroduced into the market later this year, supporting the city's long-term vision to boost tourism, trade and economic growth. Tshwane officials highlighted the airport's role in placing capital as a tourist entrance, consistent with broader efforts to increase accessibility and attract investment. The announcement is as the city pursues other aviation-related programs and public-private partnerships to unlock the airport's full commercial and tourism potential.
