If you are heading to Albafeira this summer, we recommend keeping an eye on recent changes to local laws to avoid getting caught up in unnecessary trouble.
Nicola Boswell, a British woman living in Portugal, took her to Tiktok to wipe out what change means to you at the popular Algarve resort. Reporting on the new behavior, she explained: “We were talking about this law about walking and walking around the streets in a bikini. Well, it's official now.”
She said, “It's now prohibited and the law has been passed. As of June 24th, all of this is now in effect.”
After drilling holes in a copy of a Portuguese-resident newspaper, Nicola continued to read a list of all new laws that came into effect on this date.
These include: “Wearing a bikini or swimsuit outside the beach or pool zone will result in a fine of between 300 and 1,500 euros.”
Elsewhere, drinking alcohol on the streets is currently prohibited, but urination or defecation also results in the same range of penalties. Nicola continued: “Nude or sexual acts in public also face fines of between 300 and 1,500 euros.”
Continuing with her clip, Nicola pointed out that if she spits out in wild camps, ravaged sleep and public crime, the fines range from 150 to 750 euros.
In summary, she warned.
“But no, it was handed over – it's not all accepted.”
A Portugal resident reports that the changes were implemented last summer as a result of several cases of “overbehavior.”
Unfortunately, locals say these issues continue this year.
Meanwhile, Mayor of Albafeira Jose Carlos Rollo told LUSA News Agency about the execution:
Written in Reponse on Nicola, many British people seemed to welcome change. One Tiktok user said, “Tourists need to stop and think. Don't forget that these are places where people live, places that come to the things they love, and that they affect daily life. Give respect!”
The second agreed: “I fully understand why they chose to do this. Unfortunately, too many tourists go on holiday means they can act badly. We should respect the place where others live.”
The third person said, “I'm glad to hear that. We've been to Albufeira for years and stopped because it turned into what you just described. The Algarve is beautiful, and Harion is just ruining it.”
And the fourth added: “To be honest, it's good. I've never experienced Albafeira when I was in the Algarve, but seeing how tourists handle it…it's gross.”
Others weren't impressed either, including “What are the problems with people walking in bikini? I understand the anti-social issues they want to deal with, but that's how you understand the wild police.”
“What is the difference between dressing in a certain way in a swimming pool or nearby street? What is the difference between drinking alcohol “on the street” or on the street terrace bar? Some politicians have nothing to do so, so they make laws.”
