Tourists in Tenerife are terrified of cockroaches infesting the village.
In the picturesque village of Los Abrigos in the south of Tenerife, locals and tourists were joined by unwelcome guests who flocked to the village during the busiest hours of the day.
Fumigation of the village's sewage system is carried out regularly by a company contracted by the local council, but recent inspections have caused complete disruption to businesses in the area.
Residents and tourists alike were shocked when cockroaches appeared in the local area.
The inspections were often requested by local businesses, while the fumigation began at 11 a.m., when restaurants and cafes in the pedestrian area near the port were at their busiest.
Guests enjoying a quick brunch are interrupted by a swarm of cockroaches emerging from the sewers.
The Canarian Weekly reported that staff armed with brooms and dustpans battled the influx of pests and prevented them from entering the property.
The main problem with fumigation was its timing, which Rodrigo, manager of the popular El Mirador restaurant, criticized.
“Instead of fumigating at night or early in the morning, we decided to do the fumigation at 11 a.m. during business hours,” he said.
Fortunately, the restaurant doors were still closed at the time, so the impact of the break-in on El Mirador was minimal.
It added: “The sewer grate they came out of had plenty of sun, and the shade of a nearby tree pushed them towards the cafe next door.”
A local resident was able to capture a video of a restaurant worker using a broom to prevent cockroaches from entering the store. One cafe employee described the incident as an “army of cockroaches” rising up and scattering in all directions.
There were times when cockroaches approached the entrance to our office, but thanks to the quick response of our employees, there were no major inconveniences.
However, this did not quell the dissatisfaction that arose among business owners and local residents. “Local police passed by but did not intervene,” one local resident said in the video, according to Canarian Weekly.
Businesses in Los Abrigos are now asking for fumigation to be carried out outside business hours to avoid the possibility of further incidents like this one.
