They were once popular tourist destinations, but in recent years they have been hidden in other hot spots around the world.
Looking for places to go on holiday, people can take them to social media and share “largely forgotten or abandoned” destinations and enjoy a little further away from the crowd.
On Reddit, one user asked:
“What are the places you encountered other places that used to be overrun with tourists but now mostly forgotten? What caused their decline: geopolitical changes, economic changes, environmental disasters, changes in travel preferences?
We're also curious if you think any of today's tourist destinations might experience similar fates in the future! Maybe Lisbon or Barcelona? ”
They list their favourites, listing travelers named Bodhi in California, Valosha in Cyprus, Bell Isle Amusement Park in Detroit, Hashima Island in Japan (Gankanjima) and Spree Park in Berlin.
In response, one user proposed Mexico's Acapulco, saying, “It was popular with Hollywood celebrities who owned a home on a cliff, and it is undoubtedly a shadow of tourism, driven by the threat of cartel violence these days.
Agreed, another user stated: “Acapulco is certainly a shadow of its former self, but not necessarily abandoned. The city centre is destroyed by cartel violence, but the suburbs (see Acapulco Diamante) cater almost exclusively from the highly popular tourist destinations, particularly Meixco City Residents.
The third user added: “That's a shame. We (three girls in our mid-20s) were there in 1983 and I don't remember feeling unsafe.
Sharing another location, the user stated: “The Catskill Mountains in upstate New York! Previously, it was a major tourist destination for Jewish residents, primarily New York. Today it is littered with abandoned resorts and abandoned buildings.
“The film's dirty dance took place in the 1960s (when the area began to fade), and at the end of the film, the resort owner commented that wider travel, such as trips to Europe, is causing a decline.
“To be honest, it can be a pretty good place to visit. I went to festivals every year. They try to revitalize it a bit. There's a creepy vibe in some parts.”
In addition to this, the final user stated: “Personally, Catskill Mountains has made a small comeback post from home.
