On February 14th, the Oasis Overland Africa Operations team joined us in one of the most rewarding days of the year, along with some of our dedicated crew. For over 20 years, we have worked closely with children's homes in Harare, providing support through food donations, educational materials, gardening tools and even installing boreholes. However, the highlight of our efforts remains an event that is lovingly known as “Kids Week.”
This precious annual tradition gives children an exciting break from their everyday lives on a special day trip. Many of them live and study on their home grounds. In other words, they rarely have the opportunity to explore across the environment any time soon. Thanks to the continued support of responsible travel for travel schemes, we can make this day possible. Trustworthy African ground handlers provide trucks, fuel and crews to ensure a seamless and memorable experience.
Journey of joy and discovery
For the kids, staff and our crew, this event is an absolute highlight. Traveling our land tracks, the journey itself is full of excitement, songs and laughter, even before we reach our destination. Simply driving along the lively streets of Harare is an adventure for many kids in itself!
This year we decided to travel across two different dates. On February 14th, 50 children and seven staff members, located about 30 km in Harare, took them to the Twala Trust Animal Sanctuary. Twala Trust provides safe and caring shelter for animals and birds in need, and housing more than 50 species that have been saved from conflict, injuries or abandonment in human life. The Sanctuary also has a farm rescue program and a free roaming dog shelter.
The impact of this trip was best expressed by the children and staff themselves.
Words from the family director:
“We are grateful for responsible travel and the overland area of Oasis. We were speechless to show you what you have done for us over the years, and how grateful you are for your educational trip to Twala Trust Sanctuary in particular.
Reflections from staff:
''Kids talk about these trips all year round. They're very excited today.”
''The staff are also looking forward to this day. We never go to such places and have learned a lot from recently.”
“It's nice to see our kids enjoy themselves.”
Exciting reactions from children:
''It was a happy day''
“I was excited about the trip.”
“It was a beautiful place and lunch was delicious.”
“I've never heard of this African hedgehog.”
''Thank you for taking me to these places. We learned a lot and I like these big tracks! ”
Have a lasting impact
It is always an honor to witness the curiosity, excitement and gratitude of children and be part of this experience. How much joy and learning one day trip can highlight the profound impact such opportunities have on their lives.
Today, children's homes face major challenges, especially in ensuring adequate food. After the trip we had the opportunity to assess their needs and provided essential food clauses to alleviate their situation.
We are deeply committed to supporting our homes and keeping these incredible children in the midst of joy, learning and adventure.
