The US Department of State has announced new visa rules for Nigerians who want to travel to the United States in the non-immigrant and non-diplomat categories.
The US Embassy in Nigeria was posted on its website on July 8th, with the US posting that it will issue a single input visa for a three-month validity period.
It rolls back multiple entry visas from the past five years that Nigerians enjoyed when they ended up traveling to the US.
US President Donald Trump has signed an order banning citizens from 12 countries.
A June State Department memo showed that the US was considering travel bans in 36 countries, including Nigeria. No proposals, extensions or bans have yet to be officially announced.
“As globally standard, we would like to emphasize that Visa's interactions are an ongoing process and that they will be reviewed and changed at any time, including an increase in permitted entries or an increase in periods of validity,” the statement said.
According to Reuters, officials from the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told local media that Nigeria does not have a similar policy for US citizens.
According to the State Department, Nigeria received almost a fifth of the non-immigrant visas issued by the US government in 2024.
