Air New Zealand will become the second international airline to operate from the upcoming Sydney International (WSI) airport after signing a contract with airport operators on June 11th.
Star Alliance operators are about to begin operations to the airport from mid-2027, starting with flights from the Auckland Hub.
The WSI airport, which is currently under construction, is the second most international gateway in an Australian city and is expected to go into operation in the second half of 2026.
When operating, a single runway airport aims at 24-hour operations without curfew, can handle up to 10 million passengers per year.
Air New Zealand will continue to operate to Sydney's Kingford Smith Airport, the city's main international gateway.
Airline Chief Greg Forlan said: “Sydney West International represents an exciting advancement for Australian aviation and we are pleased to be the first transtasman career to demonstrate our intention to operate there as we continue to grow.
In August 2024, Singapore Airlines became the first international airline to commit to operations at WSI, following strengthening commercial agreements for future business.
National Carrier Qantas and its low-cost unit Jetstar will also open sales locations at the airport for domestic flights.
The news follows the completion of major construction work at WSI on June 11th. The fitouts in the terminal's retail district and airline lounges will “take closer to the airport opening as commercial bids and final contracts continue to progress over the coming months.” WSI said.
