New Codeshare connects Africa to Asia

The new codeshare connects Africa to Asia through strategic contracts between Etihad Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines, increasing connectivity across two continents. Immediately, passengers from both carriers were able to book a seamless itinerary connecting major hubs such as Abu Dhabi and Addis Ababa to a wide range of international destinations.

The deal is the first phase of a broader joint venture plan announced earlier this year, positioning both airlines to significantly expand their global reach. Etihad Airlines will begin operating daily flights to Addis Ababa from October 8, 2025, while Ethiopian Airlines will launch a new route from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport to Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi from July 15, 2025. These new routes are open for booking.

    Seamless connections across continents

Under the codeshare agreement, travelers can book their trips with one ticket and enjoy the convenience of one check-in process. Your baggage will automatically be moved to your final destination, simplifying the overall travel experience. This is especially valuable for passengers traveling long distances between Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.

Alik De, Etihad Airways' Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, highlighted the importance of the partnership. “By leveraging our combined networks, we unlock seamless travel opportunities between Africa and Asia, Australia and the Middle East.

Etihad passengers have access to Ethiopian Airlines' extensive African network through Addis Ababa. Cities such as Kigali, Kinshasa, Lusaka, Harare, Victoria Falls and Entebbe are among the new destinations accessible under codeshare. Conversely, Ethiopian travelers can fly through Abu Dhabi and reach major destinations such as Sydney, Colombo, Krabi and Phnom Penh.

Responding to growing demand in Africa

The partnership reflects Etihad Airlines' growing commitment to Africa, one of the fastest growing air travel markets in the world. In 2025, Etihad is expanding its African business with new routes and additional frequencies. This codeshare with Ethiopian airlines supports its growth by providing deeper access to the African continent through established partners.

For Ethiopian Airlines, the agreement will enhance access to East Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania through Etihad's global hub in Abu Dhabi. Codeshare is expected to promote increased trade, tourism and cultural exchange between emerging markets in both regions.

    Strategic Integrity and Future Growth

The agreement is the foundation of a planned joint venture between the two carriers announced in March 2025. Once fully implemented, the joint venture will provide expanded scheduling coordination, integrated services, and potentially collaborative marketing strategies. This will provide travelers with more choice, flexibility and competitive pricing across both networks.

Through this enhanced partnership, Etihad and Ethiopians aim to redefine long-distance travel between Africa and Asia. Codeshare agreements are already reshaping the landscape by offering a streamlined booking process, improved passenger experiences, and access to more than 70 destinations. With both airlines positioned as regional leaders, their collaboration marks a new era of intercontinental air travel.
