The much-anticipated reopening of Muzuzu and Karonga airports is just three weeks away, marking an important milestone for northern Malawi. Deputy Transport Minister Stephen Marondera confirmed the exciting news during an inspection at Karonga Airport, highlighting the transformational impact the move has on mining, agriculture and tourism in the region.
Karonga Airport, which last processed domestic flights in 2010, plays a key role in supporting operations at Kaiere Karauran mines and other mining ventures, facilitating the transport of equipment and personnel.
Marondera highlighted the potential to drive economic growth at the airport, saying, “The facility will be an important link to the government's agriculture, tourism and mining (ATM) strategies.”
Meanwhile, the reopening of Muzuzu International Airport has been set to create jobs, ease pressure on road transport and increase government revenues, with airport fares already making a significant contribution to the revenues of the transport sector.
