Europe is filled with gorgeous cities, and there are vast cities, and it can often be difficult to decide what to visit. However, one destination that needs to be on all traveller bucket lists this year is the beautiful town of Glaz in the southern Austrian province of Styria. What makes your visit to Glaz so big is the fact that you receive significantly fewer tourists than anything like Vienna.
In 2023, despite being the country's second largest city, Glaz was only welcomed by just under 1.3 million tourists compared to Vienna, which saw 17.3 million people. However, the lack of tourists should not reflect the city. Glaz has a lot to offer and it seems people are beginning to realize it as the city saw a bit of a boost in 2024 with 1.39 million visits.
Glaz boasts a rich heritage and vibrant culture that can be seen throughout the city. It's no wonder the city's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area has an incredible blend of buildings of different architectural styles from different eras, serving as a testament to the city's historical and cultural evolution.
Also, the city of Seko's design, Glaz has the embarrassment of landmarks, including the island of Mal. This is steel construction on the “island” floating in the middle of the river, connecting the two banks on each side. The beautiful structure, which gives a bright blue glow at night, features an amphitheater, a cafe and a playground for small items.
When it comes to learning more about the city, it shouldn't be too difficult as visitors can choose from many museums in the city, including the Armory, the world's largest historic arsenal.
The museum, rated 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor, is said to be “sensational” and is recommended by many visitors. One said: “An absolute must-see – I've never seen anything like that. Even if you have an ambiguous relationship with the gun: the presentation on the fourth floor is sensational.”
Another addition: “For fans of military history, this is a must for anyone in Glaz. The depth of the collection is very amazing. There are all rows and rows, from guns to swords to armor.
Notable locations include over 32,000 weapons, armor and war equipment from the 15th to 18th centuries. Other museums include Kunsouth Glaz, renowned for its architecture and contemporary art, and the Museum of Natural History, offering incredible exhibitions on geology, botany and zoology.
There are so many things to do, so there are plenty of tours that travelers can take part in. Even if you are on a walking tour, you can still enjoy all the views through the open-top bus tour.
