Tourists gathering in Egypt for a spring holiday have been issued with severe warnings over “residential ships” operating in the Red Sea. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported several incidents involving British citizens on boat tours, with different types of boats involved.
Liveaboard ships are specially designed for tourists who want to jump straight into the ocean, often hosting guests overnight or for long periods of time. Divers are urged to book only through reputable vendors and are insisting on the Department of Transport's Marine Accident Investigation Division (MAIB) to comply with strict safety standards.
Additionally, vacationers should request that members of their crew members be provided with a comprehensive safety briefing before they depart. This warning guidance follows the MAIB announcement earlier this month on an increase in deaths related to Egyptian livestock diving boats.
The chief inspector of marine accidents, Andrew Mol of Marine Accidents, recognised the severity of the situation and said, “Myve is aware of 16 accidents that have occurred in the last five years on a Residential Office dive vessel operating in the Red Sea.
“Maibe has no jurisdiction to investigate accidents involving non-uk flag vessels operating within the territory of another coastal state, but he has made the appropriate authorities aware of the national interests and provided any assistance with the safety investigations they carry out.
“Our safety bulletins provide important guidance to those who intend to stay on the home board. It is important to remember that such vessels are not possible to construct, maintain, equip and operate according to similar vessel standards in the UK.
The Royal Accident Prevention Association (ROSPA) explained that 30% of incidents related to drowning overseas are due to accidents when swimming, mainly due to difficulties brought about by strong currents and the Lipudido in open water. A comprehensive guide to safely participating in water activities across the UK border can be found here.
