The British in Mauritius were hit with urgent warnings as the Foreign Office warns against the harsh tropical storm Garance set up to abuse the island. Garance has urged weather warnings across Mauritius, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that turbulence conditions are expected to last throughout the week.

Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport ir may close its doors from 7pm local time on February 26th until unspecified hours, causing travel plans to be disrupted. Travelers are being urged to reach out to the airline for the latest updates on their flights.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday: “Please stay in a safe place and follow the directions and updates from the local government. If you are visiting Mauritius and need emergency consular assistance, please contact +230 660 4900 and Press Option 2.”

This is triggered by Mauritius weather services, which declare a Class 3 Cyclone warning as Stormgarance has gained momentum 440km northwest of the island. Weather officials have reported wind speeds are rising to 70km/h, and are advised public to avoid coastal areas due to dangerous ocean conditions.

Meanwhile, the wider Southern Hemisphere is currently cyclone season, with up to six tropical storm reports across the region.

US weather media agency Accuweather reported that six tropical storms were active in the oceans of the South India and Pacific Oceans earlier this week. This was the last phenomenon seen in 1989.

These included Storm Garance and Cyclone Hondo, Bianca, Alfred, Cel and Ray. The surge in storm activity is believed to be due to weak wind shear and warm sea surface temperatures.

Colorado State University data also revealed that tropical cyclone energy across the Southern Hemisphere is 138% above normal levels. However, despite the surprising rise in storm activity, predictors predict that they will begin to settle in the coming weeks.

This is due to the sun's migration into the northern hemisphere after the spring equinox, which helps with cold water temperatures.
