Malaysia Airlines Group has formally transferred ownership of regional unit masswing to the Sarawak government following the signing of its sales and purchase agreement on February 12th.
The parent company of Malaysia Airlines expects the transfer of ownership to be completed by the end of this year, adding that Maswings will continue to operate normally throughout the transfer process.
The transfer will be built on a memorandum signed by the Airline Group, the Sarawak Government and charter operator Hornville Skyways in October 2023 to investigate the potential sale of the Mass Wings Unit.
After the acquisition of Maswings, Sarawak Prime Minister Avan Yohari Open says the new state-owned airline will be operated under the new brand Airborneo.
Yohari said in local media reports that Air Borneo will be a full-service career, highlighting the state's “regional fame as a premium destination.”
No further details have been made regarding the fleet or network.
Maswings currently operates a fleet of 14 aircraft, consisting of eight ATR72-500s and six De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters. From the hubs in Kota Kinabalu and Mili in Sarawak, the airlines fly primarily to regional and rural destinations.
The airline was launched in 2007 with the aim of connecting rural communities in East Malaysia.
