Brits seeking the perfect vacation often consider exotic, far-reaching destinations, but our coasts have hidden gems. Located along the mouth of the Dwilid Estuary in North Wales, Portmayrion is contrary to typical British coastal expectations.
When you visit this village, you may think you have arrived in Italy with its amazing Mediterranean-style buildings, sunny beaches and quaint shops. And (arguably) what's the best part?
It is said that there are some of the UK's most affordable fish and chips. Data from last year shows that visitors typically spend £8.57 on this popular dish.
This ranked the coastal gem as the third most affordable price in Fish and Chip, only behind Southwold in Suffolk and New Brighton in Wirral. Beyond this, Portmeirion has been gaining a lot of attention online.
Influencer Meera Pankhania is someone who is fascinated by her unique beauty. “My boyfriend and I were planning to go to Portugal that weekend, but when we got on the Amberlist, we visited here as an alternative and climbed Mount Snowdon,” she said in her previous Tiktok, according to the mirror.
“We stayed there for two days and I had never visited Italy myself, but I felt like I was on Lake Como. To arrive at the place, you will travel through some beautiful paths and beautiful scenery.”
The beautiful village was also the place where the cult British television classic The Prisoner was filmed. Portmayrion, a charming village surrounded by Gwynedd's heart, was created by the foresightful architect Williams Ellis, who spent 50 years developing the site after buying the land in 1925.
Today, the village has a remarkable collection of buildings of national importance, including Port Myrion Town Hall, which was built in 1938, with an impressive Grade I listed. However, you might be surprised to discover that Port Myrion does not have permanent residents, as its main purpose is to serve tourists and holiday makers.
The village continues with a set schedule and is usually welcomed daily from 9:30am to 6:30pm.
Aside from the impressive infrastructure and affordable tip shop prices, tourists are also raving about Port Myrion's afternoon tea. Last year, one visitor went to TripAdvisor to share his thoughts on this, writing:
“We had afternoon tea at the hotel. It was absolutely delicious,” another added:
“If you visited one place before you die, you still need to just come here. Then come here. We spent hours here. We spent afternoon tea.
Therefore, Port Myrion seems to be the ideal option for anyone looking for an affordable beach getaway this summer.
