Boasting immeasurable natural assets and heritage sites, KZN South Coast offers a wealth of tourism investment opportunities to identify investors. A major example is Kwaxolo Caves Adventures' expansion of R8 million. This is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing rural tourism while creating significant investment opportunities within Ray Nkonyeni's local government.
Strategically located near the coastal hubs of Margate, South Bloom and Port Edward, the Kwaxolo Caves site is uniquely located to attract national and international visitors. Already an established tourist property, the caves reach the Ferrata system using a sophisticated system, but are famous for their ancient sunrock art, breathtaking canyon scenery and waterfall waterfalls. This, combined with a new adventure offering, makes the adventures of the Kwaki Solo Caves a unique heritage and adrenaline sightseeing destination.
Realizing the possibilities of Kwazulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority (Kzntafa) – Agency of Economic Development, Tourism Environmental Environment (Edtea) – Tourism Kwazulu-Natal (TKZN) has identified Kwaxolo Caves Adventures as a flagship project to develop it into a global destination of mandatory use. Leading the KZN EDTEA and TKZN, the expansion of current multipurpose buildings forms part of a gradual strategy that unlocks the potential for untapped tourism in the region.
“The Kwaxolo Caves Adventures project is more than just a tourism development. Dr. Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism & Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), said: “By integrating rural areas like Kwaxolo into the mainstream tourism economy, it unlocks investment possibilities while creating sustainable jobs and supporting local businesses. This project demonstrates what is possible when communities, governments and investors work together towards a common vision of inclusive growth.”
Advances in the expansion of Kwaxolo Caves Adventures
Phase 1 of the R8 Million Expansion Project was completed in January this year. It includes a reception building with conference halls, staff cleansing, gravel access roads and parking, paved routes, aquariums, flooded sewage systems and pedestrian bridges along the wetlands.
Ongoing phase 2 includes the construction of multi-purpose buildings that incorporate restaurants, coffee shops, visitors cleansing and storage areas. Additional amenities under development include guard rooms, a shared brie area, picnic sites, children's play area and water and sewer systems. Despite continued construction, the site remains open to visitors, indicating the resilience and continued appeal of the region.
Phase 2 includes the construction of further adventure elements, such as a 1.06 km zip line (connecting the two edges of the valley), as well as the high-wire bridge. Funded by Idwala Holdings for R4 million, these activities adhere to strict adventure tourism standards and position Kwaxolo as a pioneering rural adventure tourism destination.
The expansion has already created employment for 14 local workers, including women and young people, highlighting the project's focus on community improvement and skill development. A dedicated safety officer has also been appointed to ensure occupational safety and health compliance.
Future investment opportunities await you
Based on current success, phase 3 of the Kwaxolo Caves Adventures project has been reviewed and approved by the Kwaxolo Trust. This ambitious stage envisages the development of 10 gorgeous chalets, an amphitheater and a 100-seater hall. All of this places this as a destination for important mice (meetings, incentives, meetings, events).
Phase 3 represents an important opportunity for investors looking to participate in sustainable tourism ventures with strong social impact. Investment options include support for small businesses providing stock participation, construction of accommodation and venue offerings, horse riding, bungee jumping, tent rentals, security services, team building and school adventures, and food and beverage outlets.
“The expansion of Kwaxolo Caves Adventures not only enriches the tourism portfolio of the KZN South Coast, but also illustrates an advanced, community-centric model of rural development,” says Dr. Sibiya. “By investing in Kwaxolo, stakeholders will have the opportunity to become part of a groundbreaking project that promotes heritage preservation, socioeconomic rise and sustainable tourism.”
