Kisum County secured a KSH 97.5 million ($750,000) grant from the African Development Bank through the Urban and City Development Fund to support a major feasibility study to transform Lake Victoria's waterfront. The purpose of this project is to create climate-sensitive and inclusive urban spaces, and is a key step in the county's broader strategy to position Kisum as a model for sustainable waterfront development.
This study assesses the technical, financial and environmental viability of projects that include a 46-kilometer promenade, parks, beaches and maritime infrastructure. Leading by Kisumu Lakefront Development Corporation, these developments aim to boost tourism, enhance public access and attract long-term investment. The feasibility work will be consistent with the framework of the national planning, with authorities optimistic and will unlock further funds for climate-smart urban renewal in the region.
