Kenya's travel and tourism leaders are calling for the liberalization of aviation access to achieve its target of international arrivals of 5 million people by 2027. Kata President Joseph Kichichu gave a speech at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Kenya Travel Agency Association (KATA). Tourism revenue also rose from KES 377 billion in 2023 to 452 billion. More than 300 local and international stakeholders were present.
Stakeholders highlighted the economic impact of tourism and aviation, with the sector giving $1.2 billion to GDP, supporting over 240,000 jobs in Kenya. Aviation officials highlighted the increased investment in infrastructure and flight connectivity, including new services for the launch of London Gatwick in July. Meanwhile, concerns have been raised over regulatory pressures, increased foreign competition and skills discrepancies in travel education. It was also called to attract young people to the sector and address industry disruptions like the next-generation airline retail system.
