Johnty Bruggen, a recent graduate of the International Hotel School in Johannesburg, recently shared his journey into the industry and aspirations for the future. His story highlights how interest, education and personal qualities shape the next generation of hospitality experts.

Johnty's love for cooking and experimenting with eating at home sparked his initial interest in the industry. “I always enjoyed cooking and experimented with different meals,” he explained. However, his decision to pursue a career in hospitality was further cemented by his educational experience. “My research has given me a solid foundation for almost every department of hospitality, and it taught me what it takes to run a hotel or guest house efficiently and professionally,” he said.

When asked about his preferred area within hospitality, Johnty expressed his deep passion for travel. “That's something I love. If I could just stuff the world and explore, I would,” he said enthusiastically.

Through his research, Jonty has developed key skills such as resilience, hard work and the importance of work-life balance. “Hard work is unnegotiable if you want to succeed,” he pointed out, adding that balancing personal relationships will help him maintain ground in a demanding work environment.

Looking back on his personal qualities, Yonty highlighted his pressure, his open mind and his ability to thrive under his strong work ethic – he considers it essential to hospitality. Looking ahead, he envisions a future where he aims to become a top general manager, and could one day run his own facility. “Most people in this industry share their goal of becoming a hotel owner or a major manager,” he shared.

Interestingly, Johnty's initial interest in hospitality stems from his high school subject, Consumer Research, rather than his childhood dream. Although he originally aimed to pursue specialized cooking, he took an academic challenge and chose a bachelor's degree in business administration in hospitality business, eventually leading him to his current educational path.

Jonty's story exemplifies true passion combined with practical education and personal qualities, as well as the ability to pave the way for success in a vibrant world of hospitality.
