Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels Fund intervened to support three young athletes, Gauta Mahlakoane, 22, Karabo Mokoo, and Maxwell Ndou, 21 and 24.
The trio, known as Gota BMX Cyclists, embarked on an ambitious 1,700km journey from Burgers Fort in Limpopo on April 2nd, equipping them with only bikes, resolve and dreams. Their goal: to inspire young people, promote healthy lifestyles, and demonstrate positive alternatives to social challenges such as alcohol and substance abuse.
Their stories quickly went viral on social media as South Africans gathered behind their causes. Now, past the half mark of their journey, cyclists often had to sleep at the police station. They are expected to arrive in Cape Town by Sunday and were stopped overnight at Leeu Gamka, Laingsburg, Worcester and Mother City.
In response to their resolve and positive message, Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels Fund has donated R20,000 to cover cyclists’ accommodation for their ultimate ride.
“I’m grateful for Jacaranda FM’s support. I don’t know what to say,” the overwhelming Maxwell Nudu told Martin Bester, host of Jacaranda FM’s breakfast and Martin Bester. “We are grateful for everything you do for us. When we started this journey, everyone thought we were crazy, but we really believe in what we are doing and the help Jacaranda FM gave us will come a long way.”
“This story is everything South Africa needs right now: those who pursue dreams, chasing challenging limits, and inspire others,” adds Martin Bester. “We are proud to support these incredible young men and look forward to what they can achieve beyond this ride.”
Gauta BMX cyclists are also determined to give back to the community. After returning to Limpopo, they plan to establish a cycling club to show more young people the joy of cycling. Create a safe and healthy space for the youth of our community.
