One of the world's most famous natural attractions, Victoria Falls offers visitors an impressive combination of natural beauty and cultural significance. Recently, well-known radio personality Carol Ohri appeared with her family on a “life-changing” trip to Zimbabwe's iconic Victoria Falls. Looking back at her family's first international holiday, Carol shares her reasons for choosing Zimbabwe, telling her adoring moments at the waterfalls, explaining why this destination should be on the bucket list of all travelers.
What made you decide to visit Zimbabwe with your family?
I have always been a massive advocate that as Africans, we should explore more of our own continents. When it comes to deciding on this holiday, my husband and I were looking around the best places to travel with our little ones, how long it takes to get to our destination, the activities they enjoy, and of course, things like malaria and other illnesses. We chose Zimbabwe and knew we had to give our children malaria pills every day. I went to Zimbabwe with my friend when I was 18 and loved it so much that I thought it was the perfect place to experience my first international trip together as a family.
Tell us about your experience at Victoria Falls.
It was absolutely majestic! It's insane to think we were there when the waterfall was considered “dry.” Victoria Falls is truly divine majesty. When visiting a place like this, you can see it very clearly. It was a beautiful experience. It is recommended to get a guide when you visit. They recommend tightening and having a more enjoyable and informative experience.
Why should this charm be on everyone's travel bucket list?
Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Although waterfalls belong to Zambia, it is insane to think that their dignity and beauty lies in Zimbabwe (you have to come and see it); Like the mighty Zambezi River, seeing everything around the waterfall gives you even more incredible visits. It's one of the things you need to see to actually believe.
What else should visitors do when visiting this beautiful area?
There's a lot to do! If you have an extra budget for your trip, take a look at doing a helicopter flip over the waterfall. Victoria Falls is also located in a nature reserve, so animals can roam freely and I heard there are some great sightings at night. We stayed at the Elephant Hills Hotel. This is because there are a large amount of wild elephants roaming the area. We also spent some time enjoying delicious traditional Zimbabwean cuisine. We wore traditional Zimbabwean clothes and put on makeup and took part in a drum experience that made the evening so special. My husband and son also went on a quad cycling while my daughter and I enjoyed our spa treatment. However, you will not be able to visit Victoria Falls unless you cruise in Zambezi. They acquired the entire experience for their guests. The cruise offers light meals, unlimited drinks and offers 2 hours of river views. Ah, if you feel brave, check out the devil's pool on the Zambian side of the waterfall!
Are you thinking about visiting next? What is the reason?
I would like to take my family to Namibia next. Swakopmund looks absolutely incredible and I know that there are some great beaches in this country. Egypt and Kenya are also very expensive on my travel bucket list.
Victoria Falls is more than just a destination. It is an experience that ignites a passion for touching the soul and exploring the rich heritage of Africa. Marked with admiration, adventure and family ties, Carol's journey serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty that lies on our own continent. For those with wanderlusts, Victoria Falls is a must-see, and Carol's story proves that as you descend from the beaten path you discover a world of wonder at the gateway.
