Ibiza has announced a new tax on British people to strengthen anti-tourism measures. The country is becoming stricter with tourist cars, cutting the number of rental cars by halving and adding a new tax of 1 euro per day.
The move is a strong attack on car rental companies. This is part of a controversial local government plan to ease crowds caused by local people and villas. Under the new rules, Ibiza will only allow nearly 28,000 car rentals requested by Rent-a Car companies. The Ibiza Council says that it has already allocated the final vehicle allocation for the rental company within the Ibiza Vehicle Inflow Control Act 5/2024.
Although 74 businesses are included in the allocation, the council only allows 16,000 vehicles. Each company has a maximum of 600 units allocated, and requires new daily taxes to be paid.
Ramón Reus, president of the Balearic Islands Vehicle Rental Business Association (AEVAB), said they were happy with the quota.
“From the beginning, we knew there was a certain amount, but we knew we had finally reached that number,” he said in a statement to Periodico de Ibiza i Formentera.
He said he was interested in what will happen from June, but “I think we'll make a positive leap to reduce the number of cars on the island. From our perspective, that's fine.”

The move is part of the overall plan to reduce the number of cars on the road and entry to Ibiza. Drivers must obtain permission to enter, circulate and park the vehicle on the island. The fee set for next week is 1 euro per day for a certified vehicle. The employer also needs to pay taxes for each vehicle.
The exact rate will be made public on the Ibiza Council website so that tourists who want to bring their cars to the island can obtain one of the 4,048 daily licenses for private vehicles arriving by boat from the Peninsula or Mallorca.
This quota also takes into account campers that have bookings at any of the island's five campsites and must also be approved. The fees tourists must pay to ensure that they can be distributed along with the vehicle in Ibiza from June 1st to September 30th is 1 euro per day.
If no changes are made as a result of the claim period, the ordinance establishes a percentage that the company “rentals the car” must pay according to the vehicle awarded. Thus, businesses with 0-100 vehicles will pay “100 euros” for the entire limit period, i.e. the entire summer season.
The “car rental” awarded between 101 and 150 vehicles costs 200 euros, while vehicles awarded with 151 and 450 vehicles must pay 750 euros. This rate doubles for car rental companies between 451 and 900, paying 1,500 euros. Finally, “Rent a car” with over 900 vehicles awarded will pay a fee of 1,500 euros and 61 euros for each of the over 900 vehicles awarded.
Shipping company Baleària has already opposed the new Ruth as he has filed an appeal for precautions from the plenary session.
However, the Ibiza Council says it is committed to the law to allow the largest quota of vehicles that can circulate the island between June and September to be “first time.”
The government emphasizes that the will of the Ibizan people is reflected in the laws and regulations that have been approved for vehicle regulations, and that the request for a halt will not be successful.
