Many Brits are fantasies of new life on the sun-drenched Australian coast, but one former Londoner shares a recent move to Sydney and a harsh reality check.
Emily, who recorded her Australian adventures in Tiktok as @thediariesofemdownunder, confesses in her latest video that she often questioned her big moves.
In the candid clip, Emily contemplates her decision, listening with her head in her hand, her voice out loud. every day? ”
She admits: “I've been here for a month and a half now, and honestly, it's an idea that's beyond my heart every day.”
Expressing her thoughts further, she captioned the post: “Traveling to Australia and why?
This post hits chords and has over 9,000 likes! and received nearly 2,000 comments from followers related to her experience.
A fellow foreigner shared: “Yeah, I want to go home,” urging Emily to ask, “How long have you been here?” User, his name was Kati and replied, “6.5 months. See how I feel! I wanted to be here for a year, but it's not worth staying to prove my points.”
Reflecting his emotions, another commented:
“I spent six months traveling around the world and Australia was part of the itinerary. Really, I couldn't wait to leave, it had the strangest vibe.
Despite receiving support from one quarter of Emily's attitude, others encouraged her to be patient. “Irish, I'm 15 years old here. June, July, August is tough. We need to switch from the fun of the Northern Hemisphere.
In addition to the discussion, another person said: “I spent 12 years here. The first five years are roller coasters who want to go home, and then I'm desperate to go back to AUS to go there for a holiday and need that reminder to check in with my family.
“I lived there for about four years. I was very unsure at first that I had made the right decision. But 20 years after returning to the UK, I still miss the extraordinary wildlife and the country. I miss the smell of eucalyptus trees after the rain, creeping up under my skin.
Others were confused as to why she wanted to leave. One Tiktok user commented: “Australia is a great country,” and another said, “It's not me. I'm not looking back. Australia is beautiful.”
But even some people in Sydney seemed to understand Emily's point of view. The local said, “For someone who has lived in Sydney for my life, the last place has ever been there.”
Another resident agreed: “I was born here, but I think I am the same.”
While many people have reflected the feeling of being misled by the online portrayal of life in Australia, some have reminded Emily that changing scenery doesn't necessarily change your life.
One individual said, “I'm not going to lie. As an Australian, I'm so confused by the number of people selling the idea of moving online without the reality of living there… so I'll make you a girl!”
Another individual pointed out, “I'm so tired of hearing from people coming here, hoping that the streets will be paved with gold and knowing that it is the same as in other countries.
The confused user also said, “A genuine curiosity and I respect this and what was expected and why? It seems like a common experience for the people of Britain. Are you confused as to what the story is and who is pushing it? Especially as a girl born and raised in Sydney.”
Similarly, in another pulsation, “The one who lets you leave the UK is… the only person you can change your life. He urged Emily to agree, not to the country: “I couldn't agree any more.”
