Budget-conscious travelers are usually the latest with the best tips and tricks to get value for money on the holidays.

However, one way they may not recognize – and it may seem very niche – is to use laidover for their benefit.

More specifically, according to one expert, adding a European mini-break to your travel itinerary can “save hundreds” at far-reaching destinations.

Mario van Poppel, founder of the Remaining Currency, Currency Exchange Specialist, shared advice on how to turn long-distance flights into money-saving adventures.

Direct flights to the US often go well beyond £1,000, especially during peak travel times, according to Van Poppel.

However, routing through Lisbon on an indirect flight will give you the opportunity to experience one of Europe's most attractive cities, potentially reducing prices significantly.

“The United States is one of Britain's most popular destinations each year, with iconic cities like New York and Los Angeles constantly building their style,” says Van Popel.

“However, the price of direct flights to the states often exceeds £1,000 in the economic seat, depending on the time of year and demand.”

Lisbon, the coastal capital of Portugal, is an indirect flight to New York and a particularly popular stopover in many popular Latin American destinations.

“It is a great destination for arts and culture and boasts spectacular views. It is one of Europe's most affordable capitals, so it's worth considering stopovers,” advised Van Poppel.

For example, direct flights from London's Heathrow to New York in early March could cost between £528 and £2,066, depending on the airline and booking time.

In contrast, indirect flights via Lisbon with Air Portugal were available for just 422 pounds.

While in Lisbon, passengers can immerse themselves in the city's colorful architecture, board the iconic tram and indulge in delicious pastel nata, a traditional Portuguese custard tart.

It's a win-win because there's an additional bonus of experiencing a new destination without the extra cost of another holiday.

So if you are planning a long distance trip to the US, consider adding a stopover to Lisbon. Not only will you save money, you will also get a taste of one of Europe's most vibrant cities.
