Nicolo Nahman, a vibrant 25-year-old South African adventurer, is redefineing the meaning of exploring Africa. With a passion for discovery and a passion for the continent's diverse culture, Nicolo's journey shares his appearance on the Tourist News Africa Podcast (parts 1 and 2), embodying the theme of youth empowerment. His travels across the South, East, Central and West Africa reveal not only the continent's rich heritage, but also the pivotal role young people will play in shaping the future of tourism.

    A journey rooted in heritage

Nicolo's love for African travel began at a tender age of three and was caused by family ties with resorts in Zanzibar, Kenya and Mozambique. “My mother's side of my family had several resorts,” he shared in part 1 of the podcast, reflecting on how these early trips sparked his curiosity. As he matured, his travels expanded beyond South Africa. From the vibrant markets in Ghana to the calm landscapes of Malawi, Nicolo's experience highlights the diversity, language, food and traditions of the continent. He describes Africa as a “massive continent” where “so many different cultures, so many different types of people, language, food…the environment, habitat, nature, everything is unrealistic.”

His encounters with the community underscore the importance of immersive travel. In Ghana, he visited historic colonial castles and connected with the region's complex past. “There is no need to see human history only in Europe.” These interactions show how young travelers like Nicolo can amplify African heritage and draw global attention to their stories.

Navigating North Africa: Practical Tips and Unforgettable Stories

In Part 2, Nicolo challenges North Africa's practicality and shares an eccentric tale that captures the adventurous spirit of young people. He emphasizes the importance of preparation and advises travelers to thoroughly study visas, documents and vaccines. “Do your research into where you are heading,” he urges, noting that some African destinations are safer than South Africa, while others require caution. He recommends Ethiopian airlines for its extensive network and comfort. This is a practical tip for young explorers navigating the vast distances of the continent. For frequent travelers, he suggests signing up for a loyalty program to access upgrades, making the long journey more enjoyable.

Nicolo's storytelling shines with memorable Nigerian anecdotes. There, as local delicateness, they were offered claws, skin, and all surveillance lizard legs. Combined with a glass of warm whiskey, the experience tested his resolve. “You say, 'I can't believe I'm doing this,'” he laughs, explaining that he is struggling to suffocate the plate while respecting his host. The whiskey flowed and the night was lively and transformed the difficult meal into precious memories. This story encapsulates it like the open mind that young travelers bring to Africa, embracing cultural differences with curiosity and respect. Nicolo's upcoming trip to a French-speaking West African country shows him further his adventurous spirit, as he plans to try out pythons.

Young people as catalysts for change

Nicolo's insights extend beyond personal anecdotes and touch on the wider influence of youth in Africa's tourism. “It's easy to travel at a younger age… you're a little more adventurous and a little more curious,” he recalls. He argues that this energy is key to driving innovation in the sector. Young tourists not only use community-run lodges and tours to boost their local economy, but also amplify African stories through social media and storytelling. “We need to understand what is happening in Africa,” he says, highlighting the global importance of the continent. By engaging in local culture, youth foster sustainable tourism and ensure that the community benefits directly from their visits.

    A call to explore

Nicolo's journey is a testament to the power of young people in shaping the tourist landscape of Africa. His story welcomes a new generation to take responsibility and boldly explore, from fishing in the vibrant waters of Lake Malawi to navigating Ghana's historic sites. For the full depth of his adventures, including more travel tips and cultural insights, both parts of his Tourism News Africa Podcast Series are available on our website. Join Nicolo and countless other young pioneers to celebrate Africa's heritage and build a vibrant future for its tourism industry. Whether you chase the waterfalls or taste local delicacies, Africa is waiting for you.
