Hottest Hospitality Trends of 2025? A hotel that is not just a place to sleep is a destination in itself. Today's travelers are no longer satisfied with their beds and breakfast. They want an immersive space where culture, community and innovation gather under one roof. This transformation is less obvious than Rosebank, as Hyde Johannesburg redefines the meaning of “work, stay, play.”
This hotel is set up in a bank.
“As Africa's first Hyde property, we bring the brand's vibrant Bohemian Lux approach to hospitality at the heart of Rosebank,” says general manager Jessica Reddinger. “And while Hyde's roots can be traced back to the Sunset Strip in LA, we were able to combine art, music, food, wellness and work to create a unique South African experience.”
Part of the magic is Hyde's commitment to authentic community engagement. The hotel's 131 rooms, including VIP and Platinum suites and a 52-square-meter headliner suite, are just one aspect of the broader ecosystem designed to serve both visitors and locals alike.
“It was incredible to be part of this development and transformation,” Redinger adds. “We're part of something that works just as well for people out of town as locals. We're here for business, sundowners and weekend stays.”
The proud Mary, a destination in itself, beautifully sums up the character of the property. This all-day eatery (and the best bar candidate for the recent South African Restaurant Awards) is a local favorite for coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The decorations are fantastic, the menu celebrates South African culinary prowess, and the restaurant flows beautifully (and proudly) into other spaces, including NPF (nose, palate, finish) tasting rooms.
The integration of the coworking spaces at Workshop 17 also changed the grounds. This modern coworking hub is for everyone looking for attraction and creative change from hybrid workers
Scenes for business travelers looking for a quiet or private space have connections to their work. As Redinger explains, locals, visitors and Hyde guests have easy access to Workshop 17 hot desks, meet-up booths, coworking spaces, private meeting rooms and cafes.
For Redinger, the bank has become a destination for both business and leisure travelers looking for “living outside the hotel room.”
“Our private gym has cardio, strength and stretch spaces to meet the health needs of our guests, while our love for local art, music and design enhances our entire stay.”
Rosebank itself plays a key role in the success of development. The suburbs have evolved into sophisticated urban villages. There, art galleries and boutique shops create a lively cityscape. The transformation of the region reflects broader trends in urban development, with mixed traits acting as a catalyst for community growth and cultural expression.
Here, each bank tenant plays a role and becomes part of the suburban social fabric along the Rosebank Mall, zones, streets and avenues along with neighbors.
“The days when travelers wanted to stay overnight or stay in Tambo are gone. Guests want to enjoy Johannesburg, whether they are in town or not for business or pleasure,” says Redinger. “Our neighbors and partners have put together regular events such as tastings, music launches, street festivals, and DJ sets that appeal to both hotel guests and local residents. Running groups enjoy club runs just outside the door, pedestrians grab coffee fixes, and businesses use workshop 17 for meetings and events.”
It's an exciting view of urban life. It uses an integrated approach and natural flow between lobbies, lounges, restaurants, events and coworking spaces to create something special.
As Rosebank continues to grow as one of Johannesburg's finest districts, the bank's innovative approach to mixed use development is proof that it sets new standards for urban living in Africa and that thoughtful design and community integration can create spaces that truly enhance urban living.
