Famous for its fertile soil, subtropical climate and ideal growth conditions, the KZN South Coast has long been synonymous with thriving sugarcane, bananas, macadamia nuts and coffee farms. Now, one brave local entrepreneur shows the area's incredible potential for another produce: mushrooms.
100% Black Oyster Mushrooms, with its production headquarters in Kwanositha, have been growing fresh oyster mushrooms for local supply since 2018. and dehydration type.
“When I first started, I didn't have a background in agriculture, but I knew it was an industry where I needed to be in. “The Department of Agriculture trained us on how to grow oyster mushrooms. I was intrigued by the fact that they could grow them almost anywhere, without the need for a large space.”
Despite the challenges of Covid-19 and its impact on the local economy, Oatlands continues to buy some local initiatives from the support they purchased South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprises (SCTIE). Members enjoy great benefits, including insights into marketing, networking and local government support options. Mkhize says he joined the platform three years ago but hasn't looked back since.
“We continue to attract more customers through local purchases and supply more retailers, restaurants, hotels and other tourist areas with dehydrated oyster mushrooms,” she said. “There is certainly a possibility of expanding in this industry, such as more dedicated mushroom production buildings to support the six-week growth cycle, allowing us to expand into global markets. We are also considering diversifying our mushroom selection to reach new markets.”
Dr. Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of SCTIE, says agriculture is one of the major economic factors on the Southern KZN coast and has the potential to explore the possibilities for investors to seek to exploit the favorable conditions of agriculture, similar to Agritoism, an industry that grows on the Southern KZN coast. The region's position also has logistical advantages, from ease of accessibility along the domestic network to forming a component of East Coast development that opens up more domestic markets. Nearby Durban Harbor can also increase access to the global market. ”
