Some Brits like to relax and soak in the sun on the beach, while others are enthusiastic explorers who can walk miles by revealing the history behind each destination. For the latter traveller, one important destination is emphasized as being ideal for visiting during the offseason when the weather is mild and there are few surrounding crowds.
Greece's Olympia reaches a refreshing 16c in April, making it ideal for those who want to avoid the summer heat. Known as the birthplace of the ancient Olympics, this charming Greek village is often overlooked by tourists. Still, it offers incredible historic landmarks and a fascinating museum. Joan Lynn, head of European Products for Riviera Travel, explained why Olympia is a must-see destination during the shoulder season.
“The city of Olympia in Greece can be incredibly hot during the summer, but at this point the temperature is 12 degrees Celsius,” she said.
Joan said: “The city, widely known as the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games, is ingrained in history waiting for this shoulder season to be discovered.”
At such mild temperatures, this is the perfect time for summer tourists to explore without peaking.
In addition to the iconic Olympic ruins, including the ancient stadium where the first Olympics were held, visitors can also explore Olympia's archaeological museum.
The museum has a rich collection of sculptures, crafts and ancient Olympic artifacts that offer deeper insight into the history and grandeur of the game.
One outstanding exhibit is the statue of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, created by Greek sculptor Phidias around 435 BC.
Olympia is also a stunning example of ancient Greek architecture and boasts the Temple of Hera, one of the oldest surviving temples in the region.
This impressive structure was dedicated to the goddess Hera, marriage and family, and was once the flames of the sacred Olympics were lit before being carried into the game.
Due to the changing pace, the Archimedes Museum is another hidden gem of Olympia. It honors the brilliant ancient Greek mathematician and inventor Archimedes.
The museum features interactive exhibits that bring his inventions and ideas to life, providing educational and enjoyable experiences for all ages.
