One of the busiest regional hubs in the Western Cape, George Airport has undergone a major upgrade. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has announced plans for a R310 million terminal expansion, which began in October 2026 and is expected to end by July 2028.
Once completed, the airport will be able to accommodate nearly 2 million passengers a year. This is more than twice the current annual traffic of 900,000.
The expansion will modernize major passenger processing areas, including check-in counters, baggage handling systems, security screenings and departure lounges. Arrival facilities and public competitions will also be refreshed, adding improvements to boarding gates, baggage billing, airline offices, retail and lounge spaces.
“ACSA is committed to minimizing operational disruptions during renovations to major passenger processing areas,” the company said.
Outside the terminal, airport road access and parking will be overhauled to streamline traffic flow and increase parking capacity.
Infrastructure upgrades are also available in the pipeline.
Emergency and surrounding road projects are scheduled to begin in November 2025 and February 2026, respectively.
Runway 11/29 rehabilitation will begin in October 2026 in line with the construction timeline of the main terminal.
The R9.4 million investment will upgrade the equipment landing system from Category 1 to Category 2. This important strengthening will commence in May 2026 and be completed by November 2026 to improve the safety and accessibility of bad weather.
These developments make George Airport poised to handle growing demand in the region and provide an efficient and comfortable experience for both national and international travelers.
