Returning from the 2024 St. Helena Yacht Race Fleet to the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC), we completed a spectacular 1,700 nautical-mile journey across the South Atlantic, testing the resilience and nautical capabilities of our crew. Departing from Cape Town on December 28th, the race is one of the most challenging offshore adventures available to both amateur and veteran seafarers in the region.
Skippered by veteran sailor Rich Kuttel, Flica claimed the overall victory and the coveted Governor's Cup trophy in 11 days, with a revised time of 23 hours and 21 minutes. With an exhilarating finish, Atalanta, co-skipped by Jerry Heggy and Hay Down, first secured the line honors to cross the finish line.
“The race exemplified the true spirit of ocean racing. It combines fierce competition with an incredible sense of camaraderie,” said David Garrard, RCYC Deputy Commodore and Race President. “The fleet has shown exceptional sailors throughout, facing everything from the initial challenging light winds to testing the Atlantic situation.”
Important highlights:
-Peter and Veraharling, seven-year-old twins riding the Magic Dragon, became the youngest competitors in racing history and won the Ambrose Family Trophy.
– The nail biting final sprint between Flica and Atalanta created one of the closest finishes in the event's 28-year history.
The 8-boat fleet experienced a variety of weather conditions during the 10-13 day crossing, introducing both tactical decision-making and endurance. Upon arriving at St. Helena, the contestants were welcomed as honorable guests, and Governor Nigel Phillips held a gala dinner at the historic plantation house.
“The hospitality shown by the saints was extraordinary,” said line winner Hay Down. “St. Helena offers a special combination of sailing challenges and cultural experiences, making this race truly unique.”
During their stay on the island, crew members explore Napoleon's exile settlement, hike up volcanic peaks, enjoy world-class snorkeling, and race reputation as both competitive events and unforgettable adventures I've solidified it.

The island remains a bucket list destination for many, explains Matt Joshua, St. Helena's tourism director. “It is always a privilege to welcome visitors to St. Helena, either on a boat or in the air! We know that the island has captured their hearts, and we want to welcome them. – and family and friends – they came back soon!”
Several major partners supported the race. This includes the Groot Constantia Wine Estate, South Africa's oldest wine estate.
“The success of this race depends on generous sponsors who share our vision for adventure and excellence. We would like to thank each of them,” Garrard said.
Preparations for the 2026 edition are already underway. “We believe there is growing international interest in the challenges of this unique ocean race,” Garrard said. “The combination of competitive sailing, adventure and opportunities to visit one of the world's most distant residential islands creates an attractive draw for sailors around the world.”
