If there is one name that reminds you of the vision of sun-soaked luxury, it is the Maldives. It is the definition of tropical dul as more than 160 resort islands offer powdery white sand, turquoise waters and their iconic overwater villas.

But even paradise has its drawbacks. With a 10-hour flight from the UK and eye-catching peak season fares, it's not exactly the easiest holiday. And after landing in Male, many travelers still face yet another journey by boat or seaplane.

Luckily, Europe hides some secrets of its own. There are several sun-drenched destinations, offering all the blissful beauty of the Maldives without the hassle. From artificial lagoons to quiet Mediterranean bays, here are places to find slices of tropical heaven in Europe (and even in the UK!).

Anipushi, Crete – Luxury floating in a lagoon

Crete may be known for its beaches, but Stella Island Resort in Analipsi is taking it a step further. Despite being inland, this adult-only escape created a Maldives-inspired experience in that roofed bungalows built around a vast artificial lagoon.

Walk straight to the water from your private deck, drink cocktails at the pool bar and hold your illusion.

    Starting at £272 per night
Verdict: Fully executed style, but no natural scenery.
    Like Maldives Rating: 6/10

Kusamil, Albania – The beauty of budgets by the Ionian Sea

Kusamil, a rising star in the Albanian Riviera, attracted attention with its clear water and untouched islands. However, during busy seasons it can feel more like a bustling seaside town than a private escape.

Avoid the crowds of Alamelas Beach Resort, just 2 km from town. The private beach, detached villas and Ionia scenery all the way to Crete, offering tranquility without a Maldives price tag.

    Starting at £95 per night
Verdict: Scenic and peaceful, but not completely secluded.

Costa Smeralda, Sardinia – Glamour meets tranquility

The name of the clue is the name. Costa Smeralda means “Emerald Coast” and is responsible for billing on shining green blue seas and pristine beaches. The area is known for its luxury, but you can find a quiet corner from its glamour.

Hotel Sports near Portrotondo has rooms with open doors on the private beach. 1 minute by the sea and 1 minute to top Italian food. Belissimo!

    Starting at £222 per night
Verdict: The view is breathtaking, but the Shimakaze is too formal because of its easy to use.

Pamperonne Beach, France – The charm of the relaxed Riviera

Extending along the coast of Saint-Tropez, Pamperonne Beach offers 5 km of soft sand and clear water. Behind the beach bars and boutiques there is a relaxed escape like the Prairie Delamar.

These beachside wooden lodges have sun decks and ocean views, not to mention pools, family fun and odd beach parties.

    Starting from £105 per night
Verdict: Great value and setting, but still has a lively atmosphere.
    Like Maldives: 7/10

Calbis Bay, Cornwall – The Royal Paradise of England (when the Sun goes out)

Believe it or not, Cornwall can match the Maldives on a sunny day. Calbis Bay offers white sand, turquoise water and sturdy coastal beauty. No passport is required.

For the best experience, check in at Carbis Bay Hotel. The main building overlooks the bay, but its beachfront suites are perfect for the sand with panoramic views.

    Starting from £325 per night
Verdict: Perfect for a sunny UK stay. When the weather continues.
    Like Maldives rating: 8/10
