US Express Shipping Specialist FedEx signed its first ATR 72-600 and was converted into a large freighter.
The agreement with Ireland-based Acia Aero Leasing (a subsidiary with IPR conversion) covers the sale of MSN1239, which will be distributed by December this year.
US Empire Aerospace began working with the 72-600 Turboprop last year, previously serving as the IPR conversion center for the previous ATR 42 and 72 variants.
Acia said the FedEx contract includes the “first time” example of a 72-600 passenger aircraft being modified as a freighter.
The aircraft was originally delivered to the Air Madagascar in 2015.
FedEx has previously delivered New-Build ATR 72-600 cargo ships as a launch customer of this type. Signed in 2017 with a maximum of 50.
Acia says it launched its own conversion program “speculatively” last year.
“We believe the 72-600 (large cargo door) aircraft will fit seamlessly into FedEx operations by providing an optimal and cost-effective solution for the requirements of FedEx's ongoing feeder fleet,” Acia tells Vice President of Commercial at Mark Dunnachie.
He says the aircraft has “specific changes” that are “unique” in the conversion of types.
Following the acquisition of design rights, there is a rear flip door, and Dunnachie says the enhancements allow FedEx to “fully optimize” the range of aircraft.
“These technological enhancements continue to set the standard for the best regional freighter solutions in the market today,” he adds.
