Surrey is a treasure trove of picturesque towns and villages, but it stands out as if one neighbour had been pulled straight out of a fairy tale. Located just outside Guilford, this enchanting village of Surry Hills is surrounded by lush woods and National Trust Grounds.
Adjacent to Cherre's equally charming village, Great Bookham and West Crandon, East Horseley greets the driver with a Disney movie-like sight. Horseley Towers, a 19th century country house designed by Charles Barry for banker William Curry, adds the charm of the village. The grand estate was later sold to William King Noel, Earl of Lovelace, who expanded the house twice and introduced bold architectural elements.
Now a two-listed hotel in grades, Horsely Towers was built using local flint and bricks. It boasts a complex network of walls, tunnels, arches, fortresses and long corridors.
Lovelace has particularly preferred tunnels and bridges, and tracks and bridges have been constructed at Lovelace to facilitate the transport of wood by horse carriages in the hilly forest south of Horseley Tower. Originally it was number 15, and 10 of these structures still exist today.
Today, visitors can explore the Lovelace Bridge in Surry Hills. One circular route in Alltrails leads the walker to nine of these bridges.
This 8km trail is considered dog-friendly and generally moderately challenging, and takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete. This scenic walk place, East Horseley also boasts local favourite for its spectacular Sunday roast.
Located across from Horsley Towers, this Surrey Gastro Pub, now known as the De Vere Horsley Estate Hotel, has acquired a similar decorative brick construction. The historic country pub serves three traditional roasts. Aubrey Allen dried beef chunks, Jimmy Butler's free range pork and crackling, Free Range Chicken Supreme.
Vegetarians are equipped with vegetarian Wellington featuring artichoke hearts, spinach, emmentals and pine nuts. Roasts start at £18.50 each and come with roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables, roasted roots, Yorkshire pudding and a jug of gravy.
East Horseley is an ideal place for a family day and has many attractions in the surrounding area. Hatchlands Park, Polesden Lacy, Newlands Corner, and Denby Wine Estate are just some of the top sites to visit.
According to property website RightMove, the average home price in East Horseley over the past year is £1,197,188. The isolated property maker accounted for the majority of these sales, obtaining an average price of £1,380,250.
