Ethiopia introduced its first locally produced e-passport, which was officially launched at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa on February 21st. E-Passport was developed in collaboration with Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS), Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH), and Toppan Security Ethiopia SC. This initiative is consistent with Ethiopia's broader efforts to modernize immigration services and reduce dependence on foreign document production.
Along with e-passport, ICS deploys visas, IDs and digital conversion measurements to allow issuance, reducing processing times and increasing protection against fraud. The transition from the Machine Readable Passport (MRP) was featured during the launch event, highlighting Ethiopia's commitment to modernizing its border control system. The national awareness campaign will help citizens adopt new passports. This is expected to contribute to a more seamless and safe travel experience.
