Ethiopia's Ministry of Tourism and UNESCO have launched a new regional initiative to promote regionalism and sustainable development across East Africa. The joint efforts were characterized by high-level workshops held in Addis Ababa under the theme of “The Role of UNESCO Global Geoparks and Geotorism for Sustainable Development.” The event brought together government officials, local experts and UNESCO representatives to explore how geological heritage can support inclusive economic growth and environmental management.
Tourism Minister Seramawit Kassa highlighted the unique geohealerage of Ethiopia (from the Simien Mountains to the depression of Dalor) and the potential for UNESCO's global geopark recognition. With 12 World Heritage Sites and five biosphere reserves, Ethiopia is positioned as a leader in the development of geotourism in the region. UNESCO officials have highlighted that the global Geoparks network, which currently only includes two sites in Africa, undervalues East Africa, with its abundant geological assets. The initiative aims not only to boost sustainable tourism, but also to create jobs and strengthen the local economy through the protection and promotion of geographical and obstetrics.
