European, Middle Eastern and American airlines are beginning to see Africa as the fertile ground for airlines as Africa is beginning to lead codeshare agreements with continental airlines and expanding its operations in the region.

The latest agreement relates to Turkish Airlines, Türkiye's flag carrier. The Career has signed a comprehensive codeshare agreement with South Africa-based Airlink to strengthen its presence on the African continent.

The contract, which will come into effect on August 1, 2025, was signed at a ceremony held at Airlink's headquarters in Johannesburg, with senior executives from both companies.

This strategic collaboration will significantly expand guest travel options by integrating Turkish Airlines' unparalleled global network with Airlink's extensive national and regional routes in South Africa and its region.

This partnership allows seamless multi-sector travel with a single ticket, providing greater convenience and flexibility for international and regional travelers.

Under the new agreement, Turkish airlines will place a “TK” flight code on Airlink-operated flights, allowing for seamless connections from Turkish Airlines services in Cape Town and Johannesburg to broad regional and regional destinations in South Africa.

Levent Konuk, Chief Investment & Strategy Officer at Turkish Airlines, said: “As a Turkish airline, we place importance on this collaboration with Airlink to increase connectivity in South Africa and the region.

“We're committed to providing a great opportunity to help you,” said De Villiers Engelbrecht, CEO of Airlink. “This collaboration with Turkish Airlines represents an important opportunity to deepen the relationship between the two airlines. This is further endorsement of the Airlink brand, meaning more convenient travel options for each customer, making world-class service easier.

With this collaboration, Turkish Airlines will not only drive strategic growth in Africa, but will further strengthen the region's presence while offering enhanced options for its guests.

Last year, Rwandair signed a codeshare agreement with Catar Airways, a deal that placed Rwanda's National Carrier Code on routes 65 of the Doha-based airline.

This has led to more options, enhanced services and greater connectivity to destinations in Africa and elsewhere, the statement said in the statement.

Under the contract, the national airline will launch a new non-stop flight between Kigali Hab and Doha this December.

“This is a major milestone for Rwandera and marks the beginning of an exciting new journey with Qatar Airways,” said Yvonne Makoro, CEO of Rwandera.

She also praised the efforts to secure Doha in the airline's route network. This opened up a way to connect customers with Qatar's hub and expand the flight map further.

This month, Qatar Airways and Kenya Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to confirm their intention to participate in a strategic partnership, including a comprehensive codeshare agreement and an increase in flights between East African state and Qatar Airways award-winning Doha Hab and Hamad International Airport.

With this partnership, Qatar Airways will introduce a third day frequency between Doha and Nairobi on a codeshare with Kenya Airlines.

This new product will be supplemented by the launch of Kenya Airlines operations between Mombasa and Doha and Qatar Airways' commercial flights during next winter season.
