With winter weather blanketing the country and new storms threatening to wreak havoc, it's easy to daydream about a sunny vacation away from the cold and snow of the season.
If you want to spend your holidays enjoying culture, delicious food, trendy cafes and 26 degree Celsius weather, South Africa is the perfect choice.
Will Sarson, a travel expert at Riviera Travel, says Johannesburg is an up-and-coming destination that is not only hot, but also quiet compared to other popular destinations.
He said: “Johannesburg offers a warm climate, rich history and vibrant culture. South Africa's largest city offers a unique and rewarding holiday.”
As for what to do in the city, Sarson said: “A visit to the Apartheid Museum is a must.
“This powerful exhibition charts this country's journey from racism to democracy, including the historic release of Nelson Mandela.
“The use of original documents, photographs, film and eyewitness testimonies makes for a humbling and moving experience.”
History and education aren't everything, but they are a very important part of visiting this country. There's plenty of creativity and charm as well.
Sarson advises tourists to get out and see the city. “Why not explore the Maboneng district with its street art and trendy cafes, or visit the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cradle of Humanity.
“Johannesburg’s combination of sunny climate, culture, history and adventure makes it a worthy alternative to the usual winter sun hotspots.”
Johannesburg is also famous for its gourmet food. South African meals often feature meat as a main ingredient, and one of the most famous foods is biltong. Biltong preserves meat by marinating it with spices, giving it a uniquely South African flavor.
Before the invention of refrigerators, South Africans stored dried meat. This is the birthplace of biltong, which is now part of South African culture.
