Under current Canadian law, children born outside of Canada can inherit Canadian citizenship from their parents, but only one generation. This means that if the parent is a Canadian citizen, even if they are born or naturalized, their children will become citizens, even if they are born abroad.

Elon Musk is also a US citizen
Does Elon Musk have American citizenship? The answer is yes. Elon Musk was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa, but moved to the United States in 1992 as a student. He obtained American citizenship in 2002.
Additionally, last year in a post on X, previously known as Twitter, Musk said he originally arrived on a J-1 visa that allowed foreign students to study in the US before moving on to a temporary H-1B working visa. Currently, Elon Musk has double Canadian citizenship.

Will his Canadian citizenship be revoked?
Last month, hundreds of thousands signed an e-Petition to revoke Elon Musk's Canadian citizenship amid tensions between the Trump administration and Canada. The petition denies the tech billionaires for opposing Canada's national interests and undermining its sovereignty. Under Canadian law, a person's citizenship can only be revoked if someone commits fraud, misrepresents it, or hides information about an immigration or citizenship application.
In response to the petition, the billionaire wrote to X: “Canada is not a real country,” the post was later deleted. The petition claims that the billionaire “used his wealth and power to influence the election,” and that he “now has become a member of a foreign government seeking to erase Canada's sovereignty.” Musk holds Canadian citizenship through his mother, born in Saskatchewan.

The petition, released on February 20th, has already been signed by more than 250,000 Canadians and is open for signature until June 20th. Despite widespread support for the petition, immigration attorneys say the document is unlikely to affect Musk's Canadian citizenship. Canadian citizenship can only be revoked if it is proven that fraud or misrepresentation has committed to obtaining it.
“Before they do this, they'll need to put in place the law, they need to amend the current Citizenship Act,” Ramo, former chairman of the Canadian Bar Association's immigration division, was quoted as CBS News. “Thanks to the birth to Canadian mothers, there is no provision that allows them to pursue a revocation of their citizenship of Canadian birth.”

Ramo said it was “very rare” for Canadian citizenship to be revoked. “If a person acquires, retains, waives or resumes, by false representations or fraud or knowingly hiding a material situation, they can revoke a person's citizenship,” Larivière said.
He said the process involves several measures and a decision by a federal court judge, unless the citizen in question asks the immigration minister to make a decision.
