EasyJet passengers could be facing a disruption yesterday (February 24th), leading to a major delay that lasted four hours. The strike, sponsored by the ANPAC (Associazione Nazionale Professionale Aviazione Civile) and the RSA, was held during peak travel times, along with several other unions.
This happened when several Italian pilot unions staged strikes. This caused flight cancellations and delays that affected routes to and from the UK. If you are affected, here are some things you need to know
Why was there a strike?
Airline workers are demanding wage increases, citing inadequate response to contract renewal requests.
I was affected by the strike, can I get a refund?
International Air Attorney Anton Radchenko, head of Airadvisor, explained that pilot strikes could be particularly expensive for airlines, daily records report. He states: “Unlike intimidating weather, which is usually perceived as exceptional by courts, strikes by airline staff are considered under the control of the airline.
“This is because differences between airlines and unions can often be resolved by improving staff salaries and conditions.
“This could only be the beginning of a turbulent year for airline strikes, with European aviation staff and their unions seeking better working conditions and improved perks like pensions. Airline staff strikes tend to become more common in the summer months when industrial behavior by employees can have a significant impact on employers' operations.
“Last August, EasyJet was forced to cancel approximately 200 flights with Portugal due to a three-day strike by the cabin crew.
Anton said: “If you plan to fly with EasyJet or Aeroialia next week and your flight is cancelled with notification that takes less than two weeks, coverage qualifies between £120 and £520.”
