The direct air connection between the UK and Sierra Leone was reestablished after a 12-year break following the success of the first flight in which British Carrier Ascend Airways is operating on behalf of Air Sierra Leone. The first London Gatwick – Freetown Service departed on April 26th and returned the following day, coinciding with Sierra Leone’s Independence Day celebration. The recovered route is powered by the UK-based Sierra Leone diaspora and international travellers, marking an important milestone for both countries.
Starting June 16th, Ascend Airways will operate three services per week on the route, supported by Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. The airline, a UK subsidiary of Avia Solutions Group, oversees flight operations, safety and maintenance. The new air link is in a position to boost tourism and business trips and is expected to support stronger economic and cultural ties between Sierra Leone and the UK.
