Swan, a grade II-listed wood frame pub that was thought to date back to the 17th century, has undergone clever renovations to introduce modern elements into the build, while still maintaining its historic appeal. The addition of a new bar and dining area glass conservatory is designed in contrast to the original construction, creating an impressive visual appeal.
“It's been campaigning for pubs, pints and people since 1971,” Camra (the campaign of Real Ale) has named Swan as the winner of the 2025 Pub Design Award. Located near the Stoll River, Punter offers tipples in river gardens and beautiful surroundings. Additionally, Swann offers its customers a variety of cask beers, Belgian and craft ales.
For its design, Swan has been awarded the Historic England Conservation Award by Kamura, in collaboration with historic England.
The judges praised the pub for successfully integrating modern extensions with historic wood frames, adding that the swan is crowned “the most stunning, historically important, beautifully absorbed pub in the whole of Britain.”
