The picturesque village in the heart of Derbyshire is said to be a “jewel” and “hidden in sight,” but there is much to see. If you're looking for a new place to explore this summer, Duffield is definitely worth a visit.
A lesser-known spot is located in Derbyshire's Amber Valley neighborhood and at the Western Bank of the Derwent River. Derbyshire Live Writer Oscar Fisher recently decided to visit and was “blown away” by what he offers. It was a quiet Wednesday afternoon, but the “hustle” in the village was clear.
He writes: “I quickly realized that the village was clearly caring for itself, and the lines of shops and businesses along the High Street are perfect examples of this.”
There are regular suspects on this Derbyshire Village high street. A selection of bird bakeries, welcoming pubs, restaurants and salons.
Notable restaurants include Viceroy, Indian restaurants with great online reviews, Pattenmaker's weapons offering flashy British traditional dishes, and Angelo's bistro at the king's head, offering authentic Italian cuisine.
Founded by Angelo Carrieri, who traveled from Salerno on the Amalfi coast of Italy to Derbyshire, the food facility is a testament to Italian culinary tradition and offers menus filled with Italian classics.
However, there is a lot to do in life, not just shops and restaurants. Duffield stands out from many other Derbyshire villages by providing activities to its residents.
Within a 10-minute walk, residents will have access to Duffield tennis club, cricket club, golf courses and nature reserves leading to the abandoned historic castle.
And Duffield boasts its unique charm that surprises visitors every September. The Duffield Screcrow Trail, part of the Duffield Arts Festival, is an annual event where residents display scarecrows based on themes such as musicians, films, and sports.
Around town, driveways, grass rings and road signs display around 60 heels, showing off the quirky charm typical of Derbyshire.
Resident Janet Kagill, 62, said the villagers “look happy all the time,” adding that “I've lived in Duffield for nearly a decade and moving here was the best decision ever made.”
Janet added:
“You stop by chat every day by watching the same person. We also have two dogs, so we always go out to see people. We also enjoy going to watch cricket on weekends and going to the pubs, but our favorite is around the corner of Makeney.”
Their “favorite” locality is one of Derbyshire's oldest pubs, named last year Europe's top 25 bars, known for its folded beer range.
