There are many seaside towns in the UK that feel like homes away from home, but few are claimed to be places to live, not just visiting. One of the picturesque gems recently placed in the top 10 stunning locations known as “Birritz of the North” is North Barwick in East Lothian. It ranked Telegraph as the number one place to visit, making it a fashionable holiday hotspot and a tourist attracted by the two sandy beaches and the seaside links.
A train ride just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, the town of North Berwick is located on the Force coast and offers breathtaking views of Basrock, home to the world's largest colony of North Cancents. Not only is it a great place to live, North Berwick has a lot to do with visitors. One of its main attractions is the Seabird Centre in Scotland. Tourists can take a boat trip to get a closer look at camellias, canuts and a variety of other wildlife.
A TripAdvisor review from one visitor stated, “I had wanted to do this trip for a long time…I wasn't disappointed. I booked in advance so I could sail on my visit to North Berwick.”
Many reviews have received high praise for the Seabird Centre, with another visitor adding that “the island is just as great as the island's life.” I'm happy to say I removed the foil balloons halfway through from the water. I want to do this again and land at Bus Rock… next year. ”
Its beaches, Mirzee Bay and West Bay, are also popular with visitors. Millsey Bay is a family favorite, but West Bay is perfect for long coastal walks and water sports.
Golf is also a large part of town, with courses like North Berwick Golf Club, Glen Golf Club and nearby Muirfield, one of the most famous courses in the world.
High Street has a healthy community atmosphere with many independent shops, cafes and traditional fish and chip shops.
The town also has award-winning gardens and flower displays thanks to North Barwick in Bloom's work.
Events take place throughout the year, including Fringe by the Sea, North Berwick Highland Games, and Puffin Fest, which celebrates Puffin's return to nearby islands.
Tantalon Castle and Dalton Castle are just a short drive away for those interested in history.
Previous visitors praise the town for its beauty and charm. A review on TripAdvisor described it as a “charming town,” but warned that “parking is a serious problem for people traveling by car.”
Another said, “There are excellent pristine beaches and harbors with many natural features to explore, including beaches, rock formations, sand dunes and more.”
