Clifftops: Relaxing hideaway on the Jurassic Coast of Pennsylvania Castle Real Estate (Image: Sophie Harris)
Located on the stunning Jurassic Coast is the Pennsylvania Castle Estate on Portland Island, Dorset. The bound island is only 6 km long and 2.7 km wide, but there is nothing to do or should be done.
The castle and its estate have a rich history dating back to the late 1700s, when first built by John Penn at the end of the 18th century. Pennsylvania Governor John Penn, along with his grandson William, built a castle. The castle was also referred to by Thomas Hardy, and was visited by Churchill, Eisenhower and Degaard.
Located east of the bound island, unique property offers an exceptional trio of accommodation to suit all kinds of travelers, from family vacations to romantic retreats. I recently stayed at one of the lodges at Clifftops.

clifftops:
Stone throws from the unique development castle of the five lodges are located in Clifftops, designed by Morrow+Lorraine. The five lodges include copper, blue, silver, stone and OPE.
Each individually designed and named lodge is decorated with nature in mind, offering an oasis of tranquility. Together, they tell the story of the ocean, stone, wildlife, weather and how people shaped the church cove.
I stayed at the biggest OPE of the lodge. We had a large terrace and an exterior kitchen, a large master bedroom and another king sized second bedroom with en suite. The lodge had a family bathroom with a bath, a comfortable sitting area with a large TV, an open plan and a fully equipped kitchen.
It overlooks the charming church Ope cove and offers additional views that stretch along the Jurassic coastline to Swanage. Visitors can also find Rufus Castle, a 15th century castle with bits dating back to the 1100s.
The OPE has a secluded entrance with comfortable, swaying chairs if you want to escape the sun, but as soon as you step into the lodge you will get spectacular views from floor-to-ceiling windows.
The wraparound terrace was not something I've ever seen before and was accessible from the second bedroom, the kitchen area, both the dining and living space. It was perfect for a summer evening with an outdoor kitchen, formal dining area and casual lounge seating.

Returning to the main living space, you will be greeted by a huge window corner with a large sofa, armchair and comfortable seating. Sitting in this area of the lodge, I realized that the history of the island was caught in front of me.
The master bedroom is located right next to the lounge area, separated by oak veneer walls when necessary, but sunrise has made me wake up. The sunrise above the lodge is incredible, with the sun shining over the sea as the boat passes.
The OPE also includes a fully mounted kitchen with a Bose portable sound system, an iPad for information and management, a washing machine drier, high quality fixtures, plates and glassware.
The overall underfloor heating is complemented by a bespoke fire that offers additional heat and ambient lighting.
My stay at OPE was incredible. Each area was meticulously designed and cleaned to make it seem like no one has stayed before. I was very sad to leave so I'm already planning when I can go back to the obstacles.
Real estate has a major environmental commitment and uses sustainable products throughout the lodge, including cleaning liquids and surface cleaners. Additionally, all trees and flora throughout the estate are managed through a defined ecological strategy with the Dorset County Council to protect the environment.

Things to do:
Despite its size, there is much to do on Portland Island, including visiting the Portland Building, the southernmost tip of Dorset. The first lighthouse here was built in 1716, but the present iconic red and white ones were built in 1906 and replaced the old ones.
There are shops and eateries if you like a fun walk around the lighthouse or a break.
But you don't have to go far from the Pennsylvania Castle real estate if you don't fantasize about it. There are small hikes available in both the church cove and Rufus Castle, so pack your walking shoes as the ground is uneven.
Or, if you love day trips, why not visit Weymouth? There are stunning beaches with views around the Jurassic Coast, and the seaside offers a variety of seaside classics, including fish and chips.

The real estate also offers two other types of accommodation, including a front row, which is perfect for active travelers. These stylish lodges are perfect for visiting Portland and enjoying coastal hiking. With modern amenities and invincible access to local activities, these lodges offer stunning views.
If you're looking for a touch of elegance and history, don't stay at Pen Castle, a magnificent nine-bedroom castle overlooking the British channels. Perfect for a large family vacation, this Gothic-style castle offers private grounds and fantastic views, offering a holiday to remember.
There is also a coffee shop called Hayloft and a bar onsite, but unfortunately this was being renovated during my visit.
Prices vary depending on the date and time of visit. Click here to book your stay at Clifftops.
