    City of Durban offers R5-million sponsorship for Investec SA Open Golf Championship

    The City of eThekwini will discuss its proposed R5-million sponsorship of the 114th Investec SA Open Golf Championship at Thursday's full council meeting. The event, scheduled for March at the Durban Country Club, will be a celebration of its official host city status, golf business and lifestyle convention, Sunshine Tour golf tournament and 'Swing Through Africa' It will be featured as part of a wider tourism and investment strategy, including filming. is a high-profile golf and leisure television series. The sponsorship will provide continuous media coverage for five months and aims to reach more than 1.25 billion viewers worldwide.

    City Manager Musa Mbele outlined additional tourism opportunities associated with the event, including the development of city regeneration projects, the enhancement of the marina and the potential construction of a private jet terminal at King Shaka International Airport. Coinciding with the championships will be the May Sunshine Tour Golf Tournament, which will see 156 local professionals compete for R2 million in prize money and will be held in conjunction with the Africa's Travel Indaba in Durban. This collaborative initiative, involving local authorities and external partners, is seeking support totaling R10 million and will see Durban join this high-impact initiative aimed at increasing local economic activity and the city's global standing. It is positioned as a major host city.
