The Mozambique government will invest roughly $300,000 to purchase and distribute 4,000 life jackets to marine transport operators across the country by the end of 2025. The initiative, led by Maritime Transport (Itransmar), aims to enhance passenger and crew safety amid growing maritime concerns involving the submarine for small-scale arts.
The distribution has already begun, with 300 jackets being handed over to Angoche in Nampora, with another 1,600 being set for delivery by the end of April. In total, it will be equipped with nearly 150 operators spanning 34 major intersections in six states. The move is mostly related to inadequate safety equipment on wooden ships after Itransmar recorded 38 shipwrecks in 2024, resulting in 159 deaths. The initiative highlights the government's focus on the safety of Mozambique's maritime transport sector. It is based on both local mobility and coastal tourism operations.
