Britt collided from Ryan Air Flight as he didn't make any extra payments to reserve a seat. Scott McCormick and his girlfriend Maysca from Birmingham last month.
When the couple booked a plane ticket, they chose not to pay an additional fee to book a seat after checking in, due to randomly assigned seats being randomly assigned. “We went to check in at our gate and then we were told to wait on one side,” McCormick said in a video of Tiktok. “Everyone checked in to their seats…we didn't book seats, we didn't have any previous and never had a problem before.”
As other passengers passed through the gate, staff called out the couple. “They finally walked through us and said, 'You were checking in last and you didn't reserve a seat so there's one seat left.”
They were told that only one of the couples who can fly on that plane, while the other could give a free ticket on the next available flight. Scott insists that the company wants them to fly with them and buy other tickets.
“There's no compassion, no empathy,” the gym coach said in his video. “There is no real attention from anyone about this.” The couple paid an additional £100 for a new ticket, and they could fly together and sit at the airport for four hours waiting for their next flight.
Ryanair said the aircraft were replaced at the last minute due to low seating and did not overbook flights. The company said it would look for passengers without seat reservations to collide in exchange for compensation if flights are accidentally overbooked.
A Ryanair spokesperson told the Independent: “This flight from Birmingham to Palma de Marolca (May 1) was not an “overbooking.” It was scheduled to work on the 737-8200 (197 seats), but had to be replaced with a 737-800 aircraft (189 seats) for operational reasons.
“As a result, one passenger was unable to travel on this flight and was re-housed on the next available flight to Palma de Marorca.
“Mr. McCormick's travel companion was not denied boarding, but he chose to board and travel on this flight from Birmingham to Palma de Mallorca and had to pay the missed departure fee (£100) to book for the next available flight.
“Mr. McCormick was notified via email on the day of the trip (May 1). He was entitled to claim reasonable fees for receipt, but McCormick has not yet submitted a receipt of costs to Ryanair.”
