The local council fought back after the seaside town was named the worst name in the UK. Which one? We investigated our members to determine the “best and worst” seaside towns in the country.
At the bottom of the list is Bogner from West Sussex, known as the worst. There was a 36% destination score, 2 out of 5 on the beach, 2 out of 5, seaside, food and drink, tourist attractions, scenery, shopping, parking, peaceful and quiet, one out of 5 worth the money. Which one? Members called it “dirty”, “random”, “melancholy”, “a seaside town forgotten next to the sea.”
However, local government Arun District Council responded that “there is a lot to celebrate” about Bogner, noting the number of attractions and award-winning Hotsam Parks.
The council said the park is “a beautiful green space perfect for families, dog pedestrians, those who want to take a walk or enjoy a picnic under the trees,” and is home to cafes, miniature railways and adventure golf.
They also discussed the £15 million reclamation, the esplanade renovations, and the Alexandra Theatre amongst independent restaurants and shops, beaches, arcades and other features such as Butrin.
A council spokesperson told Argus: “Yes, like many seaside towns, Bogner faces a share of challenges. But what sets it apart is the strong sense of community and the real effort being made for improvement and evolution.
“The town is full of people who care for volunteers, support local events and welcoming visitors.
“If you choose to look for something good, you can find a town full of charm, character and community spirit. Support the seaside towns, celebrate their uniqueness, and help them thrive.”
